So something occured to me today, whilst wondering between the hallways of Brooks Hall. In biology (and all sciences that I know of), we have this thing called a p-value. It's a number you get after you do all the rest of the statistical analysis on your data, crunch your numbers, and then look them up on a chart or enter them into the computer. The p-value answers the question "Are my results biologically significant, or is there still a high probability that they are due to chance and that I've just been inhaling too much ethanol?" So, the larger the p-value, the less likely it is to indicate biological significance. So, by that logic, the p-value is the only thing in the universe that could with any accuracy cry (in a high squeaky voice), "I feel so BIG and INSIGNIFICANT." Brief note about friending..
I've just gone through and removed some communities I'm no longer active in and people I haven't talked to in a long time from the f-list, just for efficiency. It does not mean I'm angry at anyone who's been removed or anything. Current Mood: busy | | Friday, September 19th, 2008 | | 2:46 pm |

Odd... Your result for The Steampunk Archetype Test... The Charming Noble You are surrounded by adventure and mechanical marvels which you helped bring about. You don’t dirty your hands with the details, instead having one of the many engineers, bodgers, and tinkerers under your employ do the work. Your time is better suited for balls and social occasions where you charm and regal bearing makes you the center of attention and you can keep the conversation steered away from the unsettling topic of the anti-royalists who keep posting flyers all over the city. Hee <td bgcolor="#000000">I Am TechGnosis</td></tr>| The God of Technology is a Trickster, that much is certain. Like all technology, you are brilliant, unpredictable, anti-social and prone to breaking down at the most inopportune moments. Just when those around you have you figured out, you change. You can be a hero when everything is working properly up inside that huge brain but let something go haywire with the code and you become dark and frightening. Like TechGnosis you're a new phenomenon in human history, and whether you are good or evil yet remains to be seen. | Which Trickster Are You? Take the Trickster Test at www.isleofdreams.net. "You are in a mall when the zombies* attack. You have: one weapon, one song blasting on the speakers, one famous person to fight alongside you. (Weapon can be real or fictional; you may assume endless ammo if applicable. Person can be real or fictional.)" 1. Desert Eagle. EAT. RANGE. 2. "Bodies" by Drowning Pool. 3. Julius Caeser (it kind of worked for him before, right?) * Except, this is now my fictional setting, and zombies are kind of lame and overused. Can I go with Goths (the HISTORICAL ones) that have just drunkenly stumbled through a time portal and a significant percentage of which are falling back on the old stand by of pillaging slaughtering? (A somewhat smaller percentage have been distracted by the food court, another group is oggling the lingerie in Victoria's Secret, and one battle-scarred Goth who's always been just a bit different has snuck off to try on a bridal gown). I mean, this happens less often in fiction, and I'd like to try something different Current Mood: silly | | Saturday, May 10th, 2008 | | 8:15 pm |

I vant to clean your ears
I was reading something in my evolutionary biology textbook the other day about a kind of bird that eats the earwax of large bovids in Africa. The authors referred to its feeding habits as "vampiric." Now I can't help wondering if Bram Stroker and Anne Rice would have been as successful if vampires had always been understood to feed off of earwax. I don't think the best ST in the world could maintain a serious atmosphere at a Requiem LARP if this were the case. Look at this: http://daphnia.cgb.indiana.edu/images/Daphnia_DGC.pngThis little critter (which you might observe under a microscope in a few droplets of pond water), does something interesting which I just learned the other day. The females are capable of storing sperm from different males in specialized sheaths, and then deciding which they want to fertilize themselves with later. I can just picture a Daphnia observing her shiftless offspring and muttering "I could have sworn I reached into the left one!" Or bumping into another female and pulling out some sperm and handing it to her with a cheery "I think this one might be more your type." The possibilities, they are endless. I've got a snowy owl familiar. Go me. Your Score: Independent Soul. You scored -13 Extroversion, -2 Sensitivity, and 2 Openness!
You are calm and logical, but not unemotional. You are an introvert, at heart, preferring to read alone than be subjected to the crush and noise of a big party or bar. You have a few friends and family, whose presence you welcome - to a point. Even they can wear on your nerves eventually, and you need to retreat back into your personal space for a while so you can recharge. Your energy comes in bursts, after which you need a long nap or a couple of evenings at home to recuperate.
You are comfortable with yourself, and reasonably confident. You want the friendship and goodwill of others, but you are not willing to sacrifice your principles in order to get it. If your close friends need something that you can provide, however, you will be the first to offer it.
You are a good and sympathetic listener, and are aware of your friend's emotional states. With your very close friends, you will open up, but rarely - you don't like to burden people with your problems. At the same time, though, you are honest and are not willing to alter the truth for the sake of convenience. Among strangers you are reserved, and may resort to making jokes to disguise your true feelings.
While you are not afraid of conflict, you do not seek it, either. When you are hurt or insulted, you feel that you have a choice to make. You can choose to take the up on it and defend yourself, or you can let it pass. Your decision may depend on how well you know the person, how personally you take the insult, or simply what mood you are in that day. Your friends may not always know how you are going to react, for that reason. Whatever you reaction, though, you will be logical, rational and unnervingly accurate: a measured strike.
Your daemon's form would represent your calm, introverted nature, your cool logic, and your impatience with crowds of people. He or she would probably whisper ironic comments in your ear, give logical advice and try to hide his or her soft side from everyone, even you.
Suggested forms: Peregrine Falcon, Snowy Owl, Snow Leopard, Siberian Tiger, Osprey.

Urr...want to go home and curl up under a blanket with a bunch of journal articles. I've found that they make good pillows. But I got the methods section for my proposal written last night, and got to hold a boa constrictor and a ball python this morning (not at the same time). So there's hope for me. And I'm desperate for small amusments (see below) (ganked from redcandle17) 1. The character most likely to fall in love with the wrong person 2. The character whom I'm embarrassed to admit I adore 3. The character that would send me screaming in the opposite direction IRL despite being fascinating in fiction. 4. The character with the most annoying personality quirks 5. The character I most admire and why 6. The character with the worst temper 7. The character most likely to fail at everything 8. The pairings I prefer in canon 9. The pairings I prefer in fanon 10. The character with the most personal growth in canon Current Mood: achy |
